“What shall I cook? What will they eat? I can’t serve up pasta, ham and cucumber anymore…I just can’t do it.” This from a mum on Twitter sums up so many of our conversations around kids and food. Working as features editor on a national food magazine and now as a freelance food writer, I have always loved exploring new tastes and I really didn’t want that to end with children.

I have a strategy for putting meals on the table each day for our family of four – we have two boys aged 8 and 5:

  1. It has to taste good.

  2. Along with tried and tested favourites, I cook a new dish or two every week so I learn shortcuts, techniques and ways to make things taste amazing. This way I make use of my library of cookbooks (I know food writers with bigger collections, but my husband would argue it’s quite big enough and has unfairly pushed out his comparatively small collection of gardening books).

  3. There is no menu of options.

  4. We eat the same food.

  5. I plan, although depending on my mood and work, things can and do change.

The Growing Appetites weekly newsletter shares some of my thoughts on feeding a young family, living in Cornwall and occasional, random musings. Hopefully within these pages you will find inspiration. I promise to point you towards fun, enjoyable and varied recipes – some quick, some slow, some online, some in my favourite cookbooks – as well as the meal hacks, hints and tips I’ve learned along the way.
